Monandry and polyandry as alternative lifestyles in a butterfly   总被引:10,自引:3,他引:7
Butterflies show considerable variability in female mating frequency, ranging from monandrous species to females mating several timesin their lifetime. Degree of polyandry also varies within species, with some females only mating once and others mating multiply.Previous studies have shown that one reason for female multiplemating is to obtain nutritious male donations that both increasethe longevity of females and result in higher lifetime fecundity.Despite the presence of male nutrient donations, some femalesof the green-veined white butterfly (Pieridae: Pieris napi)never mate more than once. In this study, we examined thisapparent paradox. We assessed to what degree polyandry is undergenetic control by a full-sib analysis, and we also estimatedthe broad sense heritability of female lifetime fecundity in singly mated females. Both polyandry and lifetime fecundityhave a genetic component. However, degree of polyandry appearsto be traded off against reduced longevity when denied theopportunity to mate more than once. It is possible that femaleP. napi display different reproductive strategies, with somefemales relying on male donations to realize their potentialfecundity and others relying on their own resources for egg production. In nature, polyandrous females may be preventedfrom mating multiply due to unfavorable weather. We discussthe possibility that the trade-off between degree of polyandryand life span when singly mated may affect the maintenanceof genetic variability in female mating frequency in this species.Possible reasons for these different reproductive strategiesare discussed.  相似文献

By wrapping prey and offering it as a nuptial gift, males can obtain mating and/or parental benefits despite some costs. Males of the Neotropical semiaquatic spider Paratrechalea ornata (Trechaleidae) offer females a nuptial gift consisting of a prey item wrapped in silk. What stimulus inhibits males from feeding and elicits gift construction? We hypothesized that signals associated with female silk threads could affect decision-making by males. We investigated three groups of males carrying a captured prey under different experimental treatments. In the treatment S, males were exposed to an arena with female silk; in SF, males were exposed to both silk and a female confined in a cell, and in the control group, males were exposed to a clean arena. Gift construction was observed only in the S and SF groups, with a similar occurrence rate. After touching females (SF group), males did not change their pattern of gift construction. Gift construction occurrence increased with male and female age. The results lead us to assume that the existence of chemical cues associated with female silk elicits male searching behaviour and gift construction, allowing males to decide between eating or wrapping prey according to the possibility of a sexual encounter. Anticipating gift construction, males are ready to mate, diminishing the risks of predation, female desertion or male–male scramble competition. The effect of age on behavioural variation and the rate of construction is discussed.  相似文献

When ejaculates are costly to produce, males are expected to allocate their ejaculate resources over successive matings in a manner that optimizes their reproductive success and this may have important consequences for their mates. In seed beetles (Coleoptera; Bruchidae), ejaculates vary in size across species from weighing less than 1%, up to as much as 8%, of male body weight. Ejaculates contain not only sperm but also a range of additional substances and females in some species gain benefits from receiving large ejaculates. Male ejaculate allocation may thus affect female fitness. Here, we first characterized the pattern of male ejaculate allocation over successive matings in seven-seed beetle species. We then assessed how this allocation affected female fitness in each species. Although females generally benefited from receiving large ejaculates, the interspecific variation observed both in ejaculate allocation patterns and in their effects on female fitness was remarkably large considering that the species studied are closely related. Our analyses suggest that variation in ejaculate composition is the key, both within and across species. We discuss possible causes for this variation and conclude that coevolution between male ejaculates and female utilization of ejaculate substances has apparently been rapid in this clade.  相似文献

Female mating rate is fundamental to evolutionary biology as it determines the pattern of sexual selection and sexual conflict. Despite its importance, the genetic basis for female remating rate is largely unknown and has only been demonstrated in one species. In paternally investing species there is often a conflict between the sexes over female mating rate, as females remate to obtain male nutrient donations and males try to prevent female remating to ensure high fertilization success. Butterflies produce two types of sperm: fertilizing, eupyrene sperm, and large numbers of nonfertile, apyrene sperm. The function of apyrene sperm in the polyandrous, paternally investing green‐veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, is to fill the female’s sperm storage organ thereby reducing her receptivity. However, there is large variation in number of apyrene sperm stored. Here, I examine the genetic basis to this variation, and if variation in number of apyrene sperm stored is related to females’ remating rate. The number of apyrene sperm stored at the time of remating has a genetic component and is correlated with female remating tendency, whereas no such relationship is found for fertilizing sperm. The duration of the nonreceptivity period in P. napi also has a genetic component and is inversely related to the degree of polyandry. Sexual conflict over female remating rate appears to be present in this species, with males using their apyrene sperm to exploit a female system designed to monitor sperm in storage. Ejaculates with a high proportion of nonfertile sperm may have evolved to induce females to store more of these sperm, thereby reducing remating. As a counter‐adaptation, females have evolved a better detection system to regain control over their remating rate. Sexually antagonistic co‐evolution of apyrene sperm number and female sperm storage may be responsible for ejaculates with predominantly nonfertile sperm in this butterfly.  相似文献

The effect of gravity on surface temperatures of plant leaves   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A fundamental study was conducted to develop a facility having an adequate air circulation system for growing healthy plants over a long-term under microgravity conditions in space. To clarify the effects of gravity on heat exchange between plant leaves and the ambient air, surface temperatures of sweet potato and barley leaves and replica leaves made of wet paper and copper were evaluated at gravity levels of 0.01, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g for 20 s each during parabolic aeroplane flights. Thermal images were captured using infrared thermography at an air temperature of 26 degrees C, a relative humidity of 18% and an irradiance of 260 W m-2. Mean leaf temperatures increased by 0.9-1.0 degrees C with decreasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 0.01 g and decreased by 0.5 degrees C with increasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 2.0 g. The increase in leaf temperatures was at most 1.9 degrees C for sweet potato leaves over 20 s as gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g. The boundary layer conductance to sensible heat exchange decreased by 5% when the gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g at the air velocity of 0.2 m s-1. The decrease in the boundary layer conductance with decrease in the gravity levels was more significant in a lower air velocity. Heat exchange between leaves and the ambient air was more retarded at lower gravity levels because of less sensible and latent heat transfers with less heat convection.  相似文献

Nuptial gifts and the evolution of male body size   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In many insect systems, males donate nuptial gifts to insure an effective copulation or as a form of paternal investment. However, if gift magnitude is both body size-limited and positively related to fitness, then the opportunity exists for the gift to promote the evolution of large male size. In the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius socius, males transfer a body size-limited, somatic nuptial gift that is comprised primarily of hemolymph. To address the implications of this gift on male size evolution, we quantified the intensity and direction of natural (fecundity) and sexual (mating success) selection over multiple generations. We found that male size was under strong positive sexual selection throughout the breeding season. This pattern of selection was similar in successive generations spanning multiple years. Male size was also under strong natural selection, with the largest males siring the most offspring. However, multivariate selection gradients indicated that gift size, and not male size, was the best predictor of female fecundity. In other words, direct fecundity selection for larger gifts placed indirect positive selection on male body size, supporting the hypothesis that nuptial gifts can influence the evolution of male body size in this system. Although female size was also under strong selection due to a size related fecundity advantage, it did not exceed selection on male size. The implications of these results with regard to the maintenance of the female-biased size dimorphic system are discussed.  相似文献

Animals of many species prefer some partners over others. Discriminating among potential mates causes strong sexual selection that shapes characters and behaviors. In bushcrickets the sexes shows different latencies to remate due to differences in investment in production of the nuptial gift by males and the induced refractory period in females. We conducted experiments with the Australian bushcricket Kawanaphila mirla to test the variation in male mating success by female choice. Male remating intervals under unlimited access to food and mates were around two days, whereas most females did not remate within 12 days. Males had therefore a much shorter “time-out” from mating than females. The adult sex ratio from field samples was near to 1:1. Consequently, the OSR was male-biased with more males than females ready to mate. This male-biased OSR led to mating competition in males and choosiness in females. In a field enclosure with unlimited supply of receptive females the number of matings varied widely between males, with twenty percent of males neglected by the females. The number of matings within this enclosure was neither related to male size nor to song characters, recorded previously in the lab. However, the number of matings by individual males was positively correlated to the size of their spermatophore producing accessory gland. Females appear to prefer males with a large nutritive donation, thereby receiving a direct fitness benefit.  相似文献

In many animal species, the expression of sexually selected traits is negatively correlated with traits associated with survival such as immune function, a relationship termed a ‘trade‐off’. But an alternative in which sexually selected traits are positively correlated with survival traits is also widespread. We propose that the nature of intertrait relationships is largely determined by overall energy expenditure, energy availability and trait flexibility, with trade‐offs expected when individuals are subject to energy constraints. We tested this hypothesis in Ephippiger diurnus, a European bushcricket in which males are distinguished by two prominent sexually selected traits, acoustic calls and a large spermatophore transferred to the female at mating, and where immune function may be critical in survival. Ephippiger diurnus are distributed as small, isolated populations that are differentiated genetically and behaviourally. We analysed songs, spermatophores and the immune function in male individuals from eight populations spanning a range of song types. As predicted, we only found trade‐offs in those populations that expended more energy on song and were less flexible in their ability to adjust that expenditure. Ultimately, energy constraints and resulting trade‐offs may limit the evolution of song exaggeration in E. diurnus populations broadcasting long calls comprised of multiple ‘syllables’.  相似文献

Thoropa miliaris is a frog species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, inhabiting wet rocky habitats. Males of this species present nuptial excrescences, which are keratinized spines on the surface of some fingers and internal metacarpal tubercles. Although these spines are usually associated with male adulthood, no details of their development are available. To investigate the sequence of spines' appearance, we correlated the number of spines with size and age, which was estimated by skeletochronology. We studied individuals collected from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There was significant correlation between size of individuals and number of spines and between age and number of spines in the callosities. The first spines appeared in metacarpal–phalangeal articulation of finger II, when specimens were 1 year old. The estimated growth curve did not show stabilization at any age. We considered the degree of development of the nuptial excrescences as a proxy for sexual maturity and so individuals may already be sexually active by 1 year of age. Estimated longevity of T. miliaris is similar to that estimated for other tropical species of frogs. Although growth in anuran species is considered to be undetermined, in T. miliaris, it seems to fit either undetermined or determined models.  相似文献
